taking 2 little kids round the world - all advice welcome

Dh and I are planning to buy round the world tickets this weekend for ourselves and 2 children - DD (4y) and DS (18 m). The vague plan is to go to New York to buy all the stuff we might need then Canada (Toronto and Calgary/Rockies) to visit friends/family. After that we'll probably head somewhere like San Fran or Yosemite before heading for Australia then NZ. Probably stop somewhere beachy/ Singapore on the way home. We're going May/June/July. Dh is on unpaid leave and I've resigned.

Yup, you're right, we must be asolutely mad. Clearly DD will remember some of it and enjoy it but who, in their right mind, chooses to go on a trip to the supermarket with their 18 month boy, let alone right around the world. However the deed is done. I've handed in my letter of resignation so now we just need to make it happen.

If anyone has any advice, particularly about mustsee/mustdo stuff for Australia (in June/July)or about travelling with little ones in general please let me know. I've started trawling through the travel bit of MN, not to mention lots of serious googling but any advice welcome

Thank you for the tip and for saying something positive. I feel neither brave nor interesting at the moment - just terrified. This is not the sort of thing that we normally do but it's one of those now or never it's now.

RTK - endless questions to you now (especially as you're a fellow ER addict and I often lurk on your thread)

How old were yours?

Where were the best places?

Did they sleep at all????

Which flight times suited you best?

Probably many more Q's to come if you can be bothered to answer

nappybaglady Mon 07-Feb-05 23:06:52

whoops - I'm lagging behind you

DS 6 years

He has been travelling since a baby so very blase about planes

as he was out of school for a 3 months we had to teach all the way round

We wanted to do it in 80 days and so we did.

RTKangaMummy Mon 07-Feb-05 23:11:45

flight times dont really matter to us although prefer to arrive in daylight

Oooh Lucky you. I sometimes wish I was brave enough to do that.

Can't offer any practical advice since I've never done a round the world trip. But I have been to Calgary and Banff (got married there) and it was fantastic. Try to fit in a trip to the Athabasca Glacier if you can it's amazing. The scenery is just wonderful, we plan to go back one day when dd2 is a little older.

Good Luck

I kind of like the 80 days 'limit' too. Just not sure if we'll manage 80 hours...

Can't decide whether to be more excited or terrified

Where did you go in Oz? What time of year?

Got friends in Canmore, near Banff so hopefully spending a few weeks around the Icefields Parkway. Have been camping up there before kids - will probably hire a motor home this time. Note to self - must keep toddler away from bear cubs...

nappybaglady Mon 07-Feb-05 23:19:45

RTK just looking these places up on the map...

Going in 3 months but not v prepared as the major hurdle was taking the decision to do it so haven't really planned yet.

nappybaglady Mon 07-Feb-05 23:25:38

sounds great - do you know of anything similar in Oz? We'll be staying with a few different friends/rels in NZ so accom and transport should be quite easy but we know no-one in Oz
