Sending belongings from US to UK

Does anyone know the cheapest way to send stuff (clothes etc.) from the US and how it works? I'm going there this year and considering doing this rather than paying for excess baggage coming back but not sure which is easier or cheaper. And do you have to pay import charges if it's your own stuff?

Yes, if it’s new clothes you are only allowed to bring something like £250 worth back from America.

Posting it back will incur charges when it arrives in the UK with your carrier.
