We are planning a trip to the Amalfi Coast in Easter; just wondering what's to do there; how many days do we need and if we will need a car.

Thank you

Driving there is not for the faint hearted. We stayed in Sorrento and used the local train service. We took a boat trip to visit Amalfi.

Must sees are Pompei, Herculaneum and Vesuvius.

Public transport is very cheap and easy.

We stayed in Sorrento and got the train to Pompeii and Herculaneum ( and a coach transfer from Ercolano station to Vesuvius) We got a bus to Amalfi but it was quite hairy going around the sheer drop corners and it was also extremely packed - standing room only! I'd get the boat if we did it again. The ferry from Sorrento to Capri is good too.

Thank you very much. Will Sorrento be the best place to stay if we are taking public transport to explore the area?

Pretty sure you can take a bus from Amalfi to Pompeii etc or book an excursion. Amalfi coast is far prettier than Sorrento and the towns less commercialised.

We stayed in Sorrento and took the train to various sites (really easy)

Took the bus to Positano - my daughter turned green from the hairpin bends, but it was lovely!

I think Sorrento is best if you want to really get around and see everything. The train is very easy and cheap. I wouldn't want to take a bus from Amalfi to Pompeii as Amalfi to Sorrento was slow , uncomfortable and not for the faint hearted. After our bus ride to Amalfi I was dreading the trip home! ( although the views are amazing!)

Amalfi is very beautiful and much nicer than Sorrento but I'd always pick Sorrento as a base for convenience.

Thank you. Amalfi does look beautiful but Sorrento seems more central if we want to explore the area.

If you do decide to stay in Sorrento this is the hotel we have stayed in both times.

It is not overlooking the coast but has a lovely pool surrounded by lemon trees and beautiful gardens. The staff are so friendly and the Prosecco breakfasts excellent. A very short walk from the main central square and about an 8 min walk to the station.
