Best Italian seaside town?

Hi, just two of us are looking to go to Italy in September.

We're looking for a town on the coast and access to the sea. Preferably very cultural and historic without 60s cheap hol flats. Southern Italy.

Any ideas and recommendations?smile

Ooh go to Malcesine on Lake Garda!

Slight pricey accommodation but you can eat and drink like kings for bugger all. Easily get a smashing 2 course meal and litre of house wine for 50 Euro. It's also beautiful and chilled and there's loads to do.

Portofino is in the N, isn't it?

There's a place called Gaeta where I stayed (in a small tent grin) many years ago - it's between Rome & Naples. Going by TripAdvisor it's still pretty nice, & very Italian.

The Amalfi coast is beautiful and you can do trips to Sorrento, Capri, Ischia, Pompeii and Herculaneum.
