French Alps in the summer - which resort?

We're hoping to head to the Alps with our 11 and 9 year olds this summer. Has anyone done this and can you suggest any good resorts and accomodation - we're happy to self cater.

Are any resorts better than others for activities at a reasonable cost? We'd like to go swimming, mountain biking, rafting, walking etc.

Some resorts will offer free or heavily discounted lift passes and activities. We've only been to
Chamonix in summer in the French Alps a while back but it had plenty going on. Try the likes of Morzine , Les Deux Alpes or La Plagne.

Morzine
Chamonix (but stay in Argentier)

We went to Morzine a few years ago. It had a great swimming pool and there was a Go Ape type thing there too.

We fancied Morzine but were worried about the weather (memories of the TdF going up Alpe d'huez in pouring rain a couple of years back!). What is anyone's experience of the weather in July in this area and what on earth do you do if it pours??!

Samoens - much prettier than most of the resorts because it's a real old village as well as a tourist centre. We stayed at Trumanalp self-catering complex last summer and had a great time - 4 other apartments sharing a heated pool and garden so good for kids making friends. 10 mins walk to the market square for ice cream / food / cafes and about 2 mins walk to a cable car up a mountain.

Les Gets is very lovely. Lots of lovely restaurants, a lot of the lifts are open so you can get a lift up and walk down with stunning scenery. Les Gets has a lovely swimming lake. Morzine is close by with a pool. Rafting nearby - Frogs rafting are good. We found the weather was changeable but lovely most days in early August. We drove there and stayed in some nice B&Bs on the way. We went to Geneva for a day and Chamonix for a day. It's a fantastic holiday!

Tignes is good as well. Plenty of activities around the lake and a great indoor swimming pool. Also we went up to a glacier (can't remember the name). Not to far from Val D'Isere either. Can also do white water rafting nearby. weather was a bit iffy on some days we went mid August.
