It was years ago that we went but we loved being on the coast as much as inland. we travelled around b and b's using the lonely planet guide which was really useful. would suggest that you look into touring if poss to make the most of this fantastic area. Super size camper van attractive?

Just got back from a day trip to Ogunquit, ME. It was a cute little village and rated as a "best beach" this year. Lots of little shops and restaurants. Close to other small coastal villages too. It was definitely crowded but seemed very family oriented. A fair number of Canadians too. I'd definitely go back and would love to spend a week there. DS (3) loved playing on the beach and it had a wide sandbar that became even wider as the tide went out. Cold water though.

You might like to check out B&Bs. They're not like B&Bs here! They are aimed at the upper end of the market, luxurious. Very pretty and often expensive.
Been a while since we were in the are (1998) but we toured around Mass, Maine, Connecticut, RI, Long Island, NY, using Rough Guide for info.

I would look at Martha's Vineyard/Nantucket. Beautiful beaches, very safe for kids and really laid back. Could combine with a few days in Boston/Cape Cod. You can rent apartments/houses on the Vinyard/Nantucket, and you can usually get good hotel deals on Boston hotels especially in summer.

We used this place for an apartment in NY, and we also looked for places outside the city on it (plenty of them on there!)

In the end we rented a car with a sat nav and set off without a clue where we were going as we didn't want to be stuck in one place and wanted to see as much as possible. The sat nav had a facility on it where you could ask for places to stay in the local area such as motels and B&Bs and we found some great places! It also could tell us where we could eat, we avoided places with names like 'Bob's steakhouse' and went to 'Grandma's little bakery' instead grin We ended up in vermont and the catskills, btw.

Good luck, have fun!
