I use "Avast!". Its free and it seems to work. AVG is another freebie that I've used in the past.

Thanks MaryBS, I did use AVG in the past but that was before I had broadband and it used to takeforever to download updates

Are free ones just as good?

I really panic about these things, especially after last week dd1 was trying to print some download of icarly and the next minute I'm getting a virus warning

Yes, the free ones are as good I gave up on AVG because it took so long. Avast! downloads in the background, and is a lot smoother.

Hang on, I'll check Which?

Norton is top of the best buys. However there are a number of free ones in there...

AVG for Antivirus
Windows Defender for Anti spyware
Bullguard for Anti spam
Zonealarm for firewall

Avast was thought to be a bit technical, and as I have a techie mind, I guess I never noticed!
