Can anyone help me with a Winamp problem?

I finally downloaded the latest version of winamp (AppVer: 5.5.5.2435)

I have installed it, but Winamp will not open. An error report appears straight away "Winamp has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I'm reluctant to uninstall it as I don't want to spend hours transferring all my music back onto it again.
(or will my older version still be there if I uninstall this version??)

Why did I not just stay with the old one!!

Can anyone help?
I've googled to death but cannot find the answer.

If you save your playlist somewhere else on your hard drive you will be able to uninstall and then reinstall and just click the saved playlist file to get the music list back up. I suppose it defaults to saving it in winamp's own folder, but I never let it put it there anyway.

I'm using 5.4 so I'm not sure if 5.5 has any special bugs in it.

I don't know what caused the problem, but if it were me I would uninstall it and start again.

It will probably have installed over the earlier version, but you might want to check in case you do have two versions installed which might confuse things.

Oh and I never added any plug-ins. If you did and then upgraded the old plug-ins may still be used and that might cause a problem. I'm not sure how you remove them. It may be as simple as opening the plug-in folder and deleting them.

Thanks Oagar,

As far as I can see I only have 1 version installed.

I can't get to the playlist as I can't open Winamp

I have all my music files stored in My Docs, but I really wanted to avoid having to load them all onto winamp again.

I guess I may have to.

ah I was being silly there about saving the playlist off. Still if you have previously saved it then it might be inside winamp's folder.

That's probably C:\Program Files\Winamp

Put it in Details view and look under Type for one that's a Winamp Playlist File. You can try double clicking it if you find it.

You can also drag it into a text editor to check it's the right thing. It will look messy but will have all the track names

Also you should see a folder in there called Plug-ins. You might try moving the files out of the Plug-ins folder to somewhere else for now and see if that helps. You can always put them back after.

I don't use all of winamps functions so I don't know all the complicated bits. I just drag the music folder containing all my MP3s to winamp and it fills them in and I save that as the playlist.
