HELP! Just got new camera and software doesn't match XP??

Sorry I hope someone doesn't mind helping me figure this out...bought a Canon Ixus and every time I try and connect it to the computer to download the photos, I get a 'camera not detected' window and nothing happens.

Looked at the software and it is compatible with XP but only if you have SP2, which I tried to download but stopped because it advised me not to as it is for networks, not individual computers.

Canon Customer support is shut till Monday and need to take photos today really.

Any thoughts please before I sacrifice everything on the alter of Vista, as camera is compatible with that thankyou!!!

The "scanner and camera wizard" should work although I'm not sure I could tell you where it is...

Yes you'd think but it doesn't - it says would I like to install a new imaging device but only gives me a choice of various ones not including Canon

I used that every time with the last camera (which broke last week) and it was fine.

Damn and blast.
Thanks Soupy for trying.

If you open up My Computer when you have the camera attached and set to "view", do you get it listed as a removable drive?

Yes Soupy thankyou, however nothing is working when I try to do anything - I think itis just not compatible with XP?

I should have checked before opening the box and using the bloody thing. I don't think I can send it back now.

Shit and double shit.

If you can see the camera as a removable drive, you should be able to view the folders just as you would other computer folders and drag/drop the photos from the camera. No software

Thankyou - yes, in theory - but the computer just doesn't seem to acknowledge the camera is there at all - well it'll do a test on it, which takes about a millisecond, via the drives thing but apart from that no options at all.

I've been told I should get a card reader and do it that way, bypassing the camera, so will have to as too late to return the camera!

Thanks for your help x

If you have XP you should be running SP3 by now. Not sure what you are referring to about not being for 'individual computers' - do a Windows Update again and accept everything it gives you.

It would not make sense to buy Vista now, Windows 7 is just around the corner.

Oh MrV. Thankyou. I did updates today and got IE8, somehow, which is vair nice.

I did not try and add SP3. Can I do that without a network? SP2 said 'STOP do not install this unless you are part of a netowrk, there is a smaller and more appt package for you here (link) so I did that instead.

can I get SP3 then? Oh here we are. From manual:

OS:
Win Vista
Win XP SP2
Win 2000 SP4

Computer model: The above OS should be installed on PCs with built in USB ports mine had XP, nothing fancy.

So SP3 no good it would seem.

Overview
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) provides new proactive security technologies for Windows XP to better defend against viruses, worms, and hackers. In addition to a more robust security infrastructure, SP2 improves the security configuration options of Windows XP and provides better security information to help users faced with security decisions.

Read technical details about SP2, including what's new in SP2, how to deploy SP2, and how to manage an environment with SP2.

DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A smaller, more appropriate download is now available on Windows Update. The best way to ensure you get Windows XP Service Pack 2 is by turning on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP today. You can use our step-by-step instructions or, if you prefer, let us do it for you.

Not sure if I have misinterpreted this, grateful if you are able to explain!! Thanks.

I think you need to go here and download SP3. "Download Windows XP SP3 now from Windows Update".

SP2 on the box will be a minimum requirement.

You don't want the link that says "Download and deploy Windows XP SP3 to multiple computers" which is the equivalent of the SP2 one you had earlier.

Oh feck, every time I click on install it, it takes me to the express or custom page, I ticked on express, it installed something else, but I keep going round in circles - can't seem to choose SP3 at all.

Sorry I am rubbish at this type of thing, I have no idea how to do it.

What if you click on custom? What options are there?

and are you sure you've not already installed it as an automatic update...?

You need to have at least SP1.4 installed before you can install SP3, so if your version is earlier than 1.4, you'll have to install SP2 before you can put SP3 on. To find out which version you have, click Start, and then click Run.Copy and paste, or type the following command and then click OK:
winver
A dialogue box displays the version of Windows and the service pack that is currently installed on your computer.

Well if I have Soupy it still isn't working with the camera.
Rusty, thanks I did that but it said I wasn;t authorised to see that stuff does that mean I'm not logged in as an administrator? How can I do that?

I now should have SP1 as an update, since this evening, don't think SP3 was on the list.

Thanks again for all your help. Card reader looking like best option atm, as well as ringing Canon on Monday and asking them.
