Can any one direct me to some online shops as I have been searching and there is so much on offer and I am not sure what I really need. It has to be cheap but good enough to do the dc's homework (secondary)and for the internet mostly just for information, research for school etc.

What do I look for to know it will work with wireless internet? What is the minimum I should expect it to cost?

I'v started looking into this as well and reckon all I'll need is a netbook, which are cheaper. The ASUS make seems pretty good but hopefully someone with more knowledge will be along to help you/us out

I have one of these and dd1 (7) has one too

The only downside is that you cannot install a real player but for general web browsing and word processing it is fab

I bought mine from the DellFactoryOutlet store on eBay it's Dell selling off scratched machines, with awesome warranties & customer service but I just checked and they're not there any more! They were fantastic.

To work with wireless internet, you just look for a listing that says WiFi.

Before you buy a netbook go and have a look and play first, the size of the keyboard and screen can be annoying to some people if you use it a lot. What's your budget?

As for online try ebuyers or dabs. My personal preference is ebuyer just because they have a phoneline and are easy to get hold of if you have a problem.

definitely go and fiddle. also some of the cheaper ones will have limits on functionality which you need to think about.

I like the laptops by dell on the tesco site but herbietea that one looks good too. I can find £349 offers but maybe it is worth paying abit more. Don't think the netbook would be any good, have played with one before in store but found it too small. Just have to decide now!

Under £400 would be ideal.
