Can you plug one into any stereo? Or does it have to be relatively new? I've got an Apple ipod dock and a Denon UD-M30 and they don't seem to be compatible (I can hear music coming out of the speakers but it is very , very faint). The Denon is about 8 years old so I'm thinking it's just too old to use in this capacity. Is there such a thing as a stereo which is not compatible with ipod docks because it's just too old?

i'm not sure exactly what you mean..... but any stereo that has AUX connection sockets on the back (they are the red and white holes and there are sometimes two pairs of them) can play ipod music using a cable that is fairly cheap to buy.
either thru the headphone socket see link for example
or thru the ipod charge socket like this one

saves a fortune on fancy bose sounddock etc

Sorry if that is not answering your question

Does your dock not have its own speakers?
