You should be able to get it all back.

Find a friendly man that knows about computers. They will be able to boot your system using an accessory drive and then access your stuff on your hard drive. (or plug your hard drive into there system).

I would be cautious about doing too much.

What operating system are you using?

If you are using XP then maybe this will work.

Create a new user profile then go into C:\Documents and Settings making sure that 'protected operating system files' are not hidden for this folder. You can get to this from 'Tools', 'Folder Options' then click on the view tab. You may have to enable viewing of hidden files first.

Log in as another user. Not the old profile or the new profile.

Copy everything except Ntuser.dat, Nuser.dat.log and Ntuser.ini from the folder marked with your old profile name to your new profile name.

Log back in as your new profile.

If this doesn't work it may be that your hard drive is giving up and this has caused the corruption in the data. How old is your computer?

its ok dont panic

If you do a search your files will still be there

all that has happened is that the folder on the c drive under documents and settings with your login name on it no longer works

Chances are your files are now stored directly under your c drive

hope this helps a little

The system is designed to make it very difficult to access the 'other' users folders. If you can get logged in as an administrator there is a way to get control back of them and copy stuff off before it all goes.

this MS page shows you how to change the file persmissions on a folder so everything in it or in subfolders is visible to your temporary profile.

Putting this failing drive in another computer as a second drive is probably safer, but it still can be complicated I think to get access.

Just realised it may be simpler than that.

Open C:\Documents and Settings. On the Tools menu click 'Folder Options'. Look on the View tab for 'show hidden files' and also untick 'hide protected files'

Now in C:\Documents and Settings there should be more folders. Is one your usual profile name? If so look and see if there are files inside (they may still be hidden)

sorry not been on line since tea time

I had a look in my c drive and there are still files called snow... \ documents but was to scared to open them.

Maybe open them in the administrators log in ?
what about system restore would that help at all?
just had an error message box about a corrupt file
C\DOCUME~1\all users\applicationdata\ norton\ lots of numbers \ etc
then telling me to do chk dsc butit keeps failing at 12% checking indexes
not at all computer minded ...can not access my stuff at the mo

Try opening them in an Admin account. You probably won't be able to get your account back so you will have to create a new one.

A system restore may help but you may lose files depending on when you last created a restore point.

If this does not could be that Windows itself has become corrupted. Back up as much as you can to another hard drive or disks and re-install Windows.

Failing this, its probably a hard drive failure and you will need to replace it.

When you do get it fixed, find a method of backing up that suits you. Basic guide, the more places you can put your data, the less likely it is you will lose it.
