Vista can't read Word. So if you are sent an email in Word you can't read it. I hate Vista.

XP I could put up with, Vista I got rid of after 2 days of wanting to put my foot through the computer

Indeed it is, but they have made it that way to trick you into wanting it, it is rubbish!

I've not noticed any problems with Vista.

its an operating system. how can it be prettyu?

i havent noticed nay differnece at all. i can use all the usual office things like word and powerpoint and excel in the sameway as before. except of course that i have with this laptop the next version of word, so i have to remember to save as a 97 file before sending it as an email attachment.
i just cant see any differences. am i thick and blind?

I have the VIP version, Polgara. I'm assuming that the others have Vista Hoi Polloi.

I've not noticed any "doesn't read Word" incidences either.

It is not the same as XP. Parts of it are crap. But I personally have had no problems.

And it does read word. And every other programme I've put on it.

I liked XP.
I like Vista.
I don't get all the fuss, but then I don't use IT as much as lots of people do for work, etc.

Vista IS prettier and shinier.

Yes, what's this about it not reading word?
It reads word just fine!

If you buy a computer it may or may not have Microsoft Word or Office installed on it. It depends how much you paid for it. (Sometimes it's on there as a trial and expires after a month or something.)

I have no real objection to Vista, but I hate Office 2007 (which tends to ship with it in a trial version) with every fibre of my being.

Vista is nicer and it don't have any problems with it not reading Word documents.

Well I did until I installed Office

Word 2007 has a new format (.docx files). If you want to read them in older versions of Word, you need to install the compatibility pack.

Alternatively, I believe OpenOffice 3 will read .dcox files as well.

Office 2007 isn't that bad once you get used to it though it's really annoying that it can't handle multiple images properly unless you put them into a drawing canvas, whereas Excel can (and Excel has a much better version of Word Art which wasn't put into Word for some reason which I read once & then instantly forgot)

At school (I'm IT manager at a junior school) we have 2007 on the computers in the suite & 2003 on the laptops - the children are able to switch from one to the other with no problems at all, it's the staff who have the problems!

With Vista, there have been some problems with compatibility with certain programs - especially some accounting problems iirc. I have Vista at home but haven't had anything I can't run except a very old game called Sherlock which runs in DOS!

At school we are still downgrading all our new computers at school to XP because we don't want to have to handle a mixed system on the network. By the time we have to make the move, the new Windows 7 will probably be out (they are talking about next year), so we'll probably go straight for that on our next ICT suite.
