Computer did an automatic update and now long threads on MN are taking nearly 2 mins to load....help needed for computer technophobe

I am running vista and IE7.

I have MN set up to unlimited messages per page as I hate the whole page nonsense. It was running fine.

Pooter did an automatic update yesterday and since then long threads are taking an age to load, and locking out IE while it does it, so I can't go off and check FB/update my scrabble games while it loads.

I can only assume it has to do with the updates it did yesterday.

Can anyone help get me back to normal? I have switched it to pages in the meantime, but would rather I had it set up the way it was.

If you know what updates took place you should be able to uninstall them from Control Panel - Add/Remove programs (tick the show updates box)

Generally you can find out what your PC did recently by looking in Events. It should show recent installs mixed in with other stuff.

One way to get to events is Start Menu, Click Run box. Type in eventvwr.msc

Uninstalling them is only a stopgap to see if that is the cause.

thanks . I'll try that and see what happens.

It's the second time automatic updates have buggered up my computer. The last lot crashed the system completely (although I suspect DH might have had something to do with that) and I had to pay for a complete system restore!

This is one reason I have automatic updates turned off. It means I must remember to go to MS updates every few weeks, but at least if it crashes then I know why. Also it means I let everyone else try out the new updates before I do.

Well, I've removed all the updates from yesterday and taken off the free AVG I'm testing for MN and it's still taking in excess of 90s to laod really long threads, unless I have it set to 50 messages per page.

tis a puzzlement as it was fine all day yesterday and only started doing this yesterday evening.

ah well, pages it is in future!

One last thought on that. I believe if you look on the start menu for IE7 you will find an option to load it without addons (possibly called safe mode). You might try that to see if an addon is causing the problem.
