Am thinking of getting one

I am replacing my old laptop (its about to cark it) thought i would try a mac instead of a pc this time, see what all the fuss is about

Sooo....

Best place to buy and which one to get please?

Oh you will so not regret it!

I actually got mine from the US when dh was over there for work so it was a bit cheaper (not much though!).

Mine is the most basic model (no idea of the name/number) and is now 18 months old so may not even exist any more. I wish I'd gone for the next one up because mine doesn't have a built-in DVD writer so we had to get an external one.

In all honesty, I'd go to an Apple Store if you have one near you. They're not too pushy on the sales stuff and are genuinely knowledgeable.

The other thing I would recommend is their one-to-one training although you have to go in-store to do it. Basically you pay something like £90 and for that you get something like 60 one-to-one hour long training sessions on how to use absolutely everything on your Mac.

Although, it is SO SO easy to use, you almost can't believe it.

great thanks, i want one with a built in dvd and webcam, i dont think i will have any problems learning how to use it, got a degree in 'puters and i work as a software analyst so can uaually find my way around new technologies fairly easily

Lulupapa who is a mac geek expert, says teh best place is an Apple store, followed by going to apple.com

DH is known as Number 1 at the Apple shop near us, as he was first in line when it opened..

I've got lots of macs for work and they really are the bees knees VT. Once you step over to the apple side you'll never go back.
My top tip is to think about reconditioned. The Apple Store sell laptops/desktops that are ex showroom/returns etc. They are fully guaranteed and have been checked/overhauled by Apple. You can get a much better spec for your money. I've got 2 recon's at the minute and they have been fantastic. Definitely worth looking into.
All macbooks have webcams/dvd drives/burners/ etc.

I would love a mac air but i dont think i can afford one of those, will have to be a macbook i think, i just want to buy one without the hastle of some sales nobbo trying to sell me tech support and talking crap like they do at pc world

apple do discounts for lots of people too - anyone in education can get up to 15% and lots of companies have corporate discount codes (both mine and DHs do). Worth remembering! They are great, we've got 3 at home.

That seems good VT.
If you buy a recon, you would never know! It comes packaged the same, it's immaculate, works brilliantly.
I probably won't buy another brand new.

Doesn't look like it, which is why it's so light probably.
It has remote disc. or you could buy an external drive.
I probably couldn't do without one. Are you going to use it for work or play?

Actually that Air is really cheap! It's got a solid state drive.
