WilfSell Fri 13-Feb-09 22:02:05

Have no idea what that means but it sounds VERY exciting.

S1ur Fri 13-Feb-09 22:06:02

S1ur Fri 13-Feb-09 22:08:13

<happy sigh>

it is a child lying in bed late at night and not asleep but staring at a digital clock-'s wet dream.

(I am concerned about my punctuation in that sentence...)

sfxmum Fri 13-Feb-09 22:15:23

S1ur Fri 13-Feb-09 22:19:36

YetMoreTech (MNHQ) Fri 13-Feb-09 22:31:34

Far be it from me to come across as a geeky, BO-ridden, coke drinking, pizza eating nerd with no friends or social skills, but Slur is right on the money...

Unix (the computer operating system used on the various Mumsnet servers, as it happens) measures time as the number of seconds since 1st January 1970. 39 years, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, 60 minutes an hour, 60 seconds a minute, gives you about 123XXXXXXX seconds. And it turns out that later tonight it will be 1234567890 precisely.

Having said all that, I didn't know it was happening (can't think why I hadn't checked), but that Slur is a smart arse. Perhaps we should give her a job? Official clock watcher, or summat?

Hassled Fri 13-Feb-09 22:34:34

= 39.121 years since what? Unix began? I gather that on 1st Jan 1970 something big happened .

sfxmum Fri 13-Feb-09 22:34:36

slur not that he has shared with me, he tries to keep displays of extreme geekyness private and I thank him for itgrin

but I did get a longer than expected explanation, he liked that and I did not mind it, I can see how it can be interesting

Hassled Fri 13-Feb-09 22:35:12

Damn those cross posts and slowness of calculators.

WilfSell Fri 13-Feb-09 22:36:02

So when does Debian time start then? <DH mutters>

MaureenMLove Fri 13-Feb-09 22:40:48

You know what YMT? I love you, really I do, but you lost me at Unix (the computer operating system....) <<yawn>> <<thud>> grin

psychomum5 Fri 13-Feb-09 22:42:12

so how can we veiw it then??

inquiring minds want to knowwink!

S1ur Fri 13-Feb-09 22:45:25

Well I opened a terminal window and typed some clever things...

<starts to drift off vaguely and mutter about numbers and codes>

or you could look here

grin

TheInvisibleManDidIt Fri 13-Feb-09 22:45:42

Hmm..have just shared this with Dh. He is giving me a hmm look, as if I've had too many glasses of wine (grin as if)

I think it's rather interesting btw..<stores this up as a useless interesting fact to tell peple in social situations in the future and seem geekish clever>

psychomum5 Fri 13-Feb-09 22:47:59

thanks slur

<<wanders off now curiosity has been sated>>

WilfSell Fri 13-Feb-09 22:52:37

Is it now?

WilfSell Fri 13-Feb-09 22:52:47

Now?

WilfSell Fri 13-Feb-09 22:53:01

Or now?

grin

psychomum5 Fri 13-Feb-09 22:53:41

wilf, there is 38mins yet........have some patience girlie!!!

S1ur Fri 13-Feb-09 22:54:26

arf Wilf.

Do you think around the world there'll be geeks sidling up to hot disdainful girls trying to convince them it is like NYE?
