reformatting and vista

i have vista on my computer, it came with it on it.
its giving me real jip at the moment, keeps telling me it "cant start" and going thru a long winded repair process.
i have back everything up, and have tried system restore, but i would really like to wipe and start again (like i used to with xp and 98)
the computer didnt come with a disk, yet i do have a serial number on the base.
does anyone know how i do this? do i need a disk? or is there something within windows?

We have vista, ours was a disk we brought. iirc we just used the serial number... but don't quote me.
