Have you got it scanned in ok? On mine once it's scanned in, I click on 'Finish' , then a box comes up asking me to select a destination for the image. I can choose either email or save to a file, so I'd put it straight into an email or save to desktop (or somewhere), then create a new email and add it as an attachment.

Not sure exactly how a Mac differs, or what you have already tried. But the priciple is, you put the document in the scanner and (if it doesn't open the dialogue immediately) scan the file. Name and save the file. Compose your e-mail and attach the scanned file before you send.
Sorry if that is too simplistic, not trying to insult you but not exactly certain where you are struggling.
Maybe something isn't working and its not your fault anyway?

To scan mine in on the mac I just put it in the printer and press scan so it knows it's going to scan rather than copy or print. Then I open the HPScan programme thingy. When the bulb is warmed up I can click on scan on there. Once it's all in, I click finish then save or send.

Thank you all. Absolutely nothing is happening - no scan things coming up...nothing.

Silly questions (but I've done tech support before...)

Is scanner plugged in and turned on?
Is scanner attached to computer? How?
Is scanner software installed on computer?

You could try (and I don't know Macs so this is generic) disconnecting and reconnecting the printer, and rebooting the computer.

You might need to open the scan programme iyswim, if it's not coming up automatically.

On my Mac 'HPscan' which is the scanning thingy from the printer is an icon along the bottom with all the other programmes, so I click on it and it brings up the scan thingy.

I checked all PotAndLemon's suggestions and everything seemed fine but there is no reference to any scanner.
I found out that Macs do not always recognise Canon printers/scanners but this is an Epson and it always printed ok - I've never had to scan and send a document before.

Have you tried just pressing the scan button on the scanner and see if that triggers anything to happen on the PC?

Nothing happened at all despite going in to the gubbins of the Mac and seeing if the scanner was recognised. It is not and the boxes to let it in do not let you in.
I printed out the document and sent it in the post.

Sounds as though what should be a two-way link between your computer and your scanner/printer is only functioning one way (so you can send from computer to printer, but not the other way from scanner to computer). I had this problem with a PC once and it was down to a dodgy port IIRC, but no idea what's causing yours.
