Geeky stuff

I can't get my DVD/video player to record from the tv (wail!)

We've had our dvd/video player for a year or two now but recently bought a new tv. With the old tv, it always worked fine in terms of recording tv programmes.

But now it's hooked up to the new tv (a Sony flatscreen thing with built-in freeview), it won't record off the tv any more. It will still play DVDs and videos fine. I have just spent half an hour trying to fiddle with the connections and cables (I assumed DH had made a simple error when connecting new tv and that I would be able to fix the problem) - it has made NO difference.

Can anyone think of anything v basic that I might be doing wrong? Any suggestions welcome! Feel a bit of an idiot as am sure it must be something really straightforward [hopeful].

Does dvd/video player not have it's own freeview? it's much simpler that way. Recording from the TV means the TV must be on the right channel and sometimes even switched on. You might want to post the model and number, but I will go look at mine and see what you have to do.

I bet new TV has loads of ways of connecting to it at the back. My first thought will be that you have to use a particular scart socket for recording FROM the TV. That's a guess though.

My first guess would be cables and sockets - some are one-way so wouldn't send the TV picture to the video even though you can play from it.

Next would be tuning - do you need to tune the video recorder to "hear" the TV signal right? The video/DVD instructions should tell you if you need to do anything.

Thanks both - I think we must be missing a cable or scart lead or something. I don't think that the DVD player has its own freeview - you are right, onager, that would have been much easier!

Have tried re-tuning but made no difference. Looking in the instruction booklet didn't help either!

I will quiz DH when he gets back about any "extra" cables that might have been supplied when we bought the tv...
