DH is faffing about, think he has some phonos? But the sound isn't coming through. Anyone know how this stuff works?

Usually the audio-output signal on a tv is unamplified and needs to be run through an amplifier. The speakers would be connected to the amplifier and not directly to the tv.

DH who has serious professional expertise in this area says it depends. If it's phonos, you will need phono connectors and take it into your hifi as an auxiliary input. However some TVs do have it set up so you can plug speakers straight on, but it depends on the manufacturer. There is no single answer. DH would guess in this case that phonos give you an output that you can then plug into an amp, but he says without looking at it you can't be certain.
