iPhone - need help with emails

I have the iPhone set up to synchronise with my Yahoo account. According to the website, this means that emails are pushed from the server to the iPhone every 15 mins (or longer, depending on the setting).

I do get the emails, but have to go into the email first, iyswim. Have I misunderstood? I thought that the phone would indicate that an email has arrived so I could look, like when you get a text message.

I use Outlook for my emails/contact/calender, could it be because of that?
