with .avi files.

some are played in windows others in DIX is it?

I've been trying to burn them in windows but it's no good for my DVD player.

You can play them on the PC if you install DIVX which is free.

New DVD players (for the TV) with DIVX stamped on them will play AVI files directly, but otherwise yes you need to convert and ConvertXtoDVD is pretty straightforward one to use, but it costs 44euros to buy...

I can't think off hand of a good, easy to use free one, but other people might have suggestions

Given that you can get up to say 20 AVI files on a DVD instead of using 20 DVDs it's probably worth getting a new DVD player and saving yourself some hassle (depending on how much you will be doing this)

You might be able to get ConvertXtoDVD at the same place you got the AVIs
