suspected hack into msn and facebook

I think someone may have hacked into my accounts. Will the police do anything about or am i stuck with getting new accounts etc?
Must say these are old email accounts but i still use them for certain things and old school friends cos they are in my maiden name. The facebook account is my sisters as she used my old email for facebook!

Realistically all you can do is make a new one. You may want to use a username and password that includes numbers and at least one underline as it makes it a little harder to break. There are programs out there that will try all common words including names (so many people use kids names as passwords) to break in.

You need to think if this gives them access to anything else. For example if you had lots of old emails containing passwords to other things.

Of course if they haven't changed the password to lock you out you can just change it yourself.

they have changed password to lock me out. Think i know who it is but only have a name, will the police be able to trace or will they laugh at me. BTW they havent done anything malicious i dont think just locked me out really.

Perhaps someone has tried speaking to the police and will come in and comment, but I think they will be uninterested. You might get further speaking to the email provider.

Strictly speaking the police should deal with it since it surely is a crime and they go on about identity theft now. Still I suppose all they could do is contact the email provider so maybe try them first.

Of course if you suspected this was some kind of harrassment aimed at you in particular that might make a difference.
