Do I need my windows firewall if I have AVG?

Because my AVG isn't downloading & it keeps giving me various error messages

Which version of AVG is this - AVG free, Anti-virus, with Firewall or Internet Security?

Unless it is with Firewall or Internet Security, you absolutely do need windows firewall. You do need to let windows firewall know about AVG though so it will let it update itself. Do you have Windows XP or Vista?

As long as you have the firewall turned on in AVG, you can disable windows firewall. Then reboot and see if AVG is happier.

No - the windows shield thingie says I have a firewall operating it is the AVG one (& the shield thingie seems quite happy with that)

The reason my avg isn't working is that there is a problem with my DNS cache not clearig (even if I do the ipconfig thingie)

what happens when you try to do ipconfig

& it said it failed

This refers to that problem but I'd try with all firewalls disabled first as a test

I run windows firewall and AVG free, insalled by my friend the computer forensics specialist - if it's good enough for him, I'd say it's ok.

Marmaduke I don't think that combination will protect you against, for example, malicious ActiveX controls.

Any AVG free users here have a problem with Antivirus XP?

KatyMac, you could try this:

1. Download the full package for the latest version from AVG
2. Remove the cable/turn off the wireless that connects your PC to the internet
3. Make sure you have your AVG registration information/product key
4. Uninstall AVG
5. Reinstall it from the downloaded package
6. Reconnect to the internet, register and update AVG
7. Hope you didn't just waste an hour of your life

Oh and if you want to flush the local DNS cache in Vista you need to run ipconfig /flushdns in a command prompt window that is running with administrator priviliges (right click on the shortcut, then properties -> shortcut -> advanced -> run as adminisrator). I suspect that is not the real problem though, as the DNS cache will be flushed on a reboot anyway.
