Microsoft word help needed

I cannot use microsoft word on my pc at the minute. Every time i try to type anything on a blank document, or indeed try to update/change an existing document, it comes up with the following statement in blue at the bottom of the page:

"this modification is not allowed because the selection is locked"

I have no idea how i have 'locked' the selection. Does anyone know how i unlock it?

If it is all documents I would suggest that your (trial) copy of MSOffice has not been activated.

Not sure if this helps. Just looked in 'Word Help' and it says:

To unlock a field and allow updates, click the field, and then press CTRL+SHIFT+F11.
