Hi. I have a separate hard drive and I want to move all my Personal Outlook files from my work laptop(have been made redundant) onto the hard drive before I have to give the laptop back. Anyone know how I can do that?

Well you could conect both pcs together and just copy them over but if you dont know about networking i wouldent do it as will cause you more trouble than its worth. You could copy the files onto a disk and then copy of the disk to youre pc. Or if you have usb hard drive copy onto usb then copy onto youre pc. Or email the files to youreself and download onto youre pc, and i think last option you got is online storage like rapidshare upload all files to thare then download onto youre pc.

Just use the backup facility on Outlook - you can then restore backup onto your home Outlook.

Do you know how to archive your emails etc? Archiving creates files which have names ending in .pst, then you find those files and move them onto a USB drive, a writable CD or whatever it is you have. It also depends on the quantities you have.

I'm not at all sure OpenOffice handles .pst files. You want an "export" function to save emails, contacts, etc. in a more portable format. I think you'll find export/import under the files menu?

What's the mail program on your home PC?

I am now really confused and am beinga twat - I have just realised I do have outlook on my laptop as do have Office 2007. Have just opened it and I have all the emails in my inbox that go to my BTInternet account. How come I do? That's weird...

That suggests that they aren't actually on your PC, they may be being held on a central BT server.

There are 2 protocols normally used to read your email. POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) would typically download it to your machine and delete it from the server. IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) leaves everything on the remote server, so you can access it from any PC set up to access that server.

I guess your outlook setup uses IMAP.
