Can a Sat Nav really preserve my sanity?!

We always get lost and I wonder if a sat nav can really save us. Will try to get one for fathers' day but need some advice as it seems some of them can even do dinner for you.
Went into Currys briefly and some of the features that stood out were wide screen, bluetooth connection, assortment of maps and traffic updates.
Does anyone know if traffic feature is really useful; do more maps mean slower response time; is bluetooth worth the extra; can you update/add on features?
Tom Tom seems to be the usual choice - which model do you recommend?

we have a garmin which is fantastic and we were told was better value for money, our model has bluetooth, which enables you to hook it up to the mobile and use it as a handsfree, you can then look up say a restaurant and press the call button on sat nav and will call through, very clever but have only used the functio once.
