Laptop help!

I'm posting here for traffic. I have the worst luck with laptops - either not enough memory so I have to hook it up to external memory hard drive thing. Then went back to my old one which works but overheats and cooks my knee every time I use it. I just need a laptop with a decent sized screen, decent enough memory and a CD drive. I've looked on line but the whole hard drive size etc really confuses me?! I'm a student again so need something large enough that will fit my work docs and essays on without saying I need external memory to save what I need to. AIBU to ask what laptops you have? Or what laptop your student children have? Does anyone have the Dell Inspiron 5000 or similar? I've looked and it's got either brilliant or rubbish reviews - please help!!

Thanks - it's a good idea but over today and yesterday a couple of keys have stopped working. It's definitely on its way out so makes more sense to buy one now than wait until it's completely broken probably in the middle of an assignment knowing my luck

I've just bought HP Pavilion and been struggling to get reasonable speeds from anything but Edge and Bing. Salesperson did advise it's "designed to run" on these but at my request installed Chrome instead - which is when I realised it was virtually unworkable. I see all alternatives seem to have been eliminated from relevant page so at present I can't even revert to Edge.

Wish I'd never seen the thing, despite good keyboard etc, and hope you have better luck with your choice.

Just noticed the date - guess you've now made purchase.

EmNetta, the problems you're having will be to do with the stuff that came pre installed on the laptop. Go through what's installed and get rid of anything you don't use and then stop everything that runs on start up, should help Smile

Thanks Queen, you're probably right, although I did tell them at set-up a whole list of stuff I didn't want. Am now aiming to uninstall Chrome, but can you tell me please, should I be agreeing to allow (Who?) to alter my computer at Hard Drive?

Earlier, it was doing absolutely nothing when I clicked "Uninstall", so I just left it (happens all the time with this gadget) and then noticed page had altered to a different list of apps, including Chrome - Please tell me it's ok to give this permission - or should I go back to experts and hope to understand what they're saying to me? - (Sorry, elderly newbie here).

Are you talking about the little windows pop up that happens when you try to install or uninstall something? (See pic) If yes that's okay to click, it just means you are granting the software permissions to install/uninstall itself.

I'm not sure about the second bit but windows 10 does have apps and software which are different and a tad confusing. In your start menu you can right click on the icons and uninstall both from there which might make it a bit easier. Some apps can't be uninstalled in which case you won't see the option.

Apologies for delay. Am certain sure I've typed something similar before I went off-internet, but no hope of remembering details.
Thanks anyway, and will spend more time on new laptop when I've got new router properly installed. (Latest view from ISP is that router was mistakenly sent out without having been adjusted to be ready for installation - not my fault, which was a surprise, even more of a surprise that overnight it seems to have adjusted its-self).

Anyway, when I have more confidence in connection/s I'll have another go, so thanks for all your help.
