Speaking very slowly, as though explaining it to a small child, would someone be able to recommend a VPN that will let me watch Australian TV without loads of buffering and not be too pricy and let me know how to use it via Chromecast?

And are they safe? I have always been a bit fearful of them but I realize I am an old gimmer and probably sound like my late granny who was scared of microwaves.

I think there was one we used called Easy VPN. But we used that in aus to watch U.K. TV. We don't use it anymore as we're travelling but it may help.

I'm using airVPN, so far so good (computers and phone, not router as still want UK Netflix on other devices). Very fast servers. And yes, these days a VPN is a good idea.

Some work better for various things. I tried using a VPN to watch Netflix on holiday (naughty I know) but it was horrible slow and I gave up. There are plenty of reviews out there securethoughts.com/vpn-review/ for example, if you are willing to spend some quality time on Google.

VPN services are safe, however its level highly depends on its certain type and company which provides this service. In fact when you sign up for a VPN, you put a lot of trust in the company you sign up with. The safest ones among them keep as few logs as possible and don't monitor when you're logged in or out, as also your general traffic too. Usually in this case as the best type if considered the non-free one which is provided by various companies but anyway not any of them can be trusted.
It's recommended to follow such tips for checking such companies before making your choice:
-simply look through information about them in net (in this case you can check the provider's own privacy policy, reviews and other information about it from other users)

• don't be shy to ask the certain company about the information you need (it's effective if your search through net wasn't very helpful)
  
• remember that geography won't help you (which means that VPN service in other country doesn't make you immune from the law)
