Help with macbook air weirdness

Posted this in chat too, for traffic.

I have a macbook air.

I rarely shut it down, just close the lid when I go to bed, but all my windows are still open, etc.

Normally, when I open it up in the morning, the clock in the top right corner takes a second or so to update and for that second, is stuck on the time that it was when I closed the lid the previous night.

Except, sometimes, when I open the laptop, the clock is 'stuck' on a random time in the middle of the night. This morning, according to the clock, my laptop was last shut at 3.03am.

Am I really paranoid, or does this mean someone (could only be DH really, although it seems ludicrous) is using my laptop in the middle of the night?

Or could there be another explanation? Like; my laptops closed, but still on, so is receiving updates and the last update received was 3.03am, or something?

Does anyone with proper, IT knowledge know why this happens?
