I need a set top box but don't know what sort - help please!

We have a Panasonic Viera 5 year old HD TV, with just freeview on it at the moment.

We want to be able to record tv programmes, have tv on demand (where you can scroll through the programmes?), and watch iplayer/itv player/4od etc. on the tv.

We don't want a subscription, so no Netflix etc. - just a box to do the above.

I am completely baffled and don't know what we need. Our tv has a HDMI socket in the back if that helps! Our router is upstairs and can't be moved to near the tv (does that mean we need a dongle??)

Can anyone tell me in reasonably un-techy language what qualities I need in a box? Help!

Thank you so much

We've got a Humax box that does all the above. It's very straightforward and easy to connect. We got the newest model which has Freeview Play on it which lets you view a programme on demand directly from the programme guide up to a week back.

Thank you Threesoundslikealot, can you specify which box please?

Do you have to connect it to your router or can your router be in another room?

I bought my dad a Humax FVP-4000T as a Christmas/birthday present, it does what you want, and it connects to the router over wifi, so it doesn't need to be in the same room.

I can't remember all the letters/numbers but it's the model that was released in October. And yes, all Wifi.

My aunt paid £10 for a nowtv box and uses it for 5 on demand, itv hub, iplayer and all4. You don't have to subscribe to anything for that. No recording ability but a cheap and cheerful alternative.

This is a which best buy, it needs to connect via ethernet, powerline adapter or a humanx wifi adapter. Catch up via web services. Record 2 programs at a time.
