Geeky stuff

Dropbox or similar - to share photos with others

Hello,

My extended family have recently got together and we have loads of photos from the party that I want to share with my cousins, aunts, uncles etc, who are spread around the world. Normally I'd handover a cd/usb if there are too many to email, but as three copies need to reach Australia and another copy will be going to Portugal I'm sure it'll be easier for all to use some cloud storage.

However I've never used any cloud storage facility before so please could someone recommend which would be best to securely upload about 200 photos to and share the login and password with all of the family. As I'm not sure if I'll be it using again (at least in the near future), a free/cheap option would be appreciated.

Thank you for your patience with this old dinosaur!

with dropbox you can create a folder and choose who it is shared with, so you can store loads of stuff there, and then just share the folders you need to with the relevant people.
You just need their email addresses, and it sends them a link to the folder in question.

If you upgrade to one of the paid for dropbox versions, you can restrict access so they can only view, which prevents accidental deletion, which is handy, but you could also create a second folder with copies of everything which doesn't have shared access on the free version, just in case.

Box.net is a similar service, which is also free, and you can set permissions on the free service (I think). I'm not sure how much free storage you get on it compared to dropbox, but it might be worth you looking at.

Thank you, I'll look into both of them, that's really helpful

Just thought I'd drop by in case you haven't found a perfect solution yet.

I use Google Photos.

It backs up your photos from your phone and then you can share albums or individual photos with anyone.

The storage is unlimited (if you don't mind compressing the images) or if you choose to pay for more online storage it's the cheapest option out there!

Hi

Just seen this thread.

If you want others to add photos to an album you've created - is this possible in either DropBox or Google photos?

Ideally I'd like to add my own and invite others to add theirs

Thanks
Helen
