I need a new laptop

I have a Toshiba laptop which I loathe and have decided to replace it before it conks out completely. I was planning on getting a Sony VAIO as I had one before and found it really easy to navigate and reliable but have just logged on to look at prices and it's no longer made . Can anyone recommend anything else? I want a 15-17" screen (preferably one that I can play DVDs on for car journeys), I use it for a lot of web browsing but also use Microsoft Word, Excel and various accounts packages. Reliability is much more important to me that bells and whistles - I can spend up to £500. Suggestions?
