Whatsapp question - no blue ticks

Hey. I sent somebody a text yesterday morning, they never replied and I sent another at 5pm. The morning text was ready after 5pm according to the blue ticks but the one sent at 5pm still has grey ticks - how is this possible? Surely they'd have read the one at 5pm too?
