If you're talking Xbox one or PS4 then in all honesty of say neither for kids. At a push probs Xbox over ps4 but for kids you'd be better with a wiiU which has far more child friendly games.
The Xbox one has blu Ray now so there's no benefit over the ps4 there but there are probably (just about) more games for kids than PS.
Xbox has kinect which they'll enjoy but PS has a similar camera option - kinect slightly superior in this respect imo.
Are you and dp likely to play anything on it - if so, think about what you'd play as both consoles have different games exclusive to each other so that could potentially be a factor for you. If it's purely for the kids, have a look at the wiiU and consider that too.

We have both in the house - I'm more a PS girl while DH is Xbox (yet I still edged for Xbox for the kids if was forced to choose).

There seems to tons of child friendly games on x box though. Hadn't considered Wii. Kids really want it for mine craft and various child friendly driving games. DH wants to play various grown up games on it. I hate the things but am outnumbered.

We went for Xbox one at Christmas, when DCs were nearly 9 and 11, as the games they wanted it for were on there and far more of their friends have them than Playstations. We were fine with an old Wii until then, and still use it quite a bit.

If your husband is wanting to play the he needs to decide if any of the exclusive titles are swaying him either way - Halo is the biggest Xbox game ever made while the likes of Uncharted only come on PS.
I honestly think 5 is too young to make any use of either.

One solution would be to get the Xbox/PS and also pick up a pre owned wii. The old one (the wii not the WiiU) sells pre-owned for around £40 and you'll pick up pre owned games cheap now too. Either that, or look at the handheld version (a Nintendo DS) which comes in various options (colours, screen size and 3d/non 3d) and has many kids games too.x

Yes I would have thought 5 was too young but unfortunately that Pandora's box is open......they have a PS at after school club and now he is a whizz at it. They will be well policed at home. Both play Minecraft but only in small doses and am not looking to turn them into screen time zombies.

Ps4 also doesn't have backwards compatibility. So you can't play ps3 games on it.

But I still went for it over the xbox.
