That was my question right there in the title really! If I bought a cheap tablet all I would want from it is to be able to load on movies - so should I just buy a portable DVD player? How does battery life compare? Very confused! Thank you in advance!

We have iPad. We download from BBQ iplayer and also have skygo + which means we can download some sky stuff. We don't have sky movies but if you do you can download films too.

How are you travelling? A basic car DVD player should come with 12V and mains adapters, which will cover a lot of situations. It's a simple and cheap solution as long as you have a power supply.

Oooh, I didn't know you could do that!? Do you mind me asked how you get films from Netflix onto a memory card; is it easy!?

Movies can be downloaded from blinkbox too - you have 30 days to watch them.

I want to know about downloading from netflix to watch on the move though!

We have a Nook HD+. You can watch iPlayer, Sky, and where DVDs have a digital edition, download all those to it to watch off internet. We don't do Netflix, but I think you can download those.

I like it, and you can have different things available on different profiles - so ds has no wifi available on his and not many movies

So many options! We are on a plane so battery life only which I think is going to be a problem - we'll have run everything down before we get on the plane?!
Saw this which looks cheap and cheerful, but only 2hrs battery?!

We have an iPad - are those downloading bbc iplayer etc finding that storage is an issue?

No because programmes drop off after a week or so of watching them so then we download more. Currently have about 10 programmes on iplayer and about 8 on skygo+

I got an Innotab 1 for £20, and can put DVDs or youtube clips onto it, on a memory card so in theory you could have more than one card and swap (or a big memory card!)
It is chunky and hard to break. Can be run on electric or aa batteries - I use rechargable ones but the battery life is about the same as for our portable DVD player.
To transfer your DVDs onto the innotab takes some jiggery pokers, but I followed a youtube video explaining it and all was good.

Ooooh we have an innotab! Will investigate! So DVDs on a memory card can play on it?

Try this. You need a programme to extract the stuff of the dvd (it will be encrypted) and another to stick it into a format the innotab can view. I do it a lot now I know how to! Programmes are free.
If you have bought the dvd I don't see how making a copy of it can be wrong - I do this partly as ds2 scratches so many DVDs! You can also use the programme to put something like a youtube video onto the innotab, (loads of kids stuff on youtube).

My friend is a tech whiz and has a memory card with films on it that she has already "unlocked" or whatever the term is. I am wildly optimistic now that her card plus my innotab will be a success...! Thanks and fingers crossed!
Have been browsing portable DVD players but "up to 2hrs battery life seems a bit hopeless!

Sorry, I missed the question yesterday. We use a programme called audials to record netflix streaming and replay it later.

Pretty sure it has some internal memory, but the card in mine is just one I took out of my camera - there must be a slot for it somewhere! Right had a look, it's in the battery compartment.
