Toshiba technical support only open Mon-Fri, till 6 pm. New laptop (9 days old) is now useless, as won't load internet pages. I get a message saying "Failed to connect to a Windows service. Windows couldn't connect to a Group Policy Service." This is a 9 day old laptop, with Windows 8.1. Wtf? Anyone got any suggestions as to what's gone wrong? Am so cross I feel like taking it back to Argos and demanding refund tomorrow, but if it's something that's simple to put right I'll hang on. Anyone know? The internet is working perfectly well on old laptop, phones etc, so it's not the wifi, it's the bldy laptop.

What model is it?Does it have a system image that allows you to restore it to factory settings?

It's a toshiba C50. By fiddling around tonight, and googling "failed to connect to a windows service blah blah blah" I've discovered there's an option in shuttting down, to shut down and restart, which seems to close any apps that were open and hopefully reset everything. Working ok at the moment but not holding my breath!

Hows it going now?Like you I had a quick google and what I saw seemed to suggest an error with a registery key,if it was mine I would do a factory recovery full instructions here,if it still messes you about then start making noises about a replacement.

Hi it seems better now I've done the update and restart option. Thanks for the info about factory settings, that might be useful.

I shouldn't think there's anything wrong with the laptop. It sounds as if Windoze lost the plot or some config was wrong, but sorted itself out on restarting.
