Possibly thinking about thinking about (can you sense my reservations?) a laptop for kids for Christmas. They're 10 and 12 so it would get used for a little school work and a lot of Minecraft, Sims etc. haven't a clue where o start so suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Budget?

Currently the HP 250 G1 looks like a good deal. A good spec at £450 or so and a £100 cashback offer, so you end up paying £350. It comes with Windows 7 installed and Windows 8 disks, so you can upgrade if you want. Frankly, I'd stick with Windows 7 for the foreseeable future.

I would warn that there were issues with the wifi on my HP 250 G1, but the latest driver update seems to sort it.

That laptop that Cruel recommends is only £329 here.

A week ago it was £450 with £100 cashback on ebuyer. A straight £329 is a definite improvement. I still have to claim my cashback.

Thanks for the recommendation and the links - great discount. Budget is, TBH, as little as possible because I suspect we will need to buy two - sharing would never work! But still need to buy a machine with a reasonable-ish spec. Shall have apropos look at that one now!

That should have said a proper look!

I have just spotted that the HP250 G1 at £330 has less RAM, less hard disk and doesn't seem to come with Windows 7 . This is the one I meant.
