have you got the original disc with word on it, if so uninstall office and try reinstalling from the disc. If word was a trial version you will have to buy a copy or use a free program which will be compatible with word.

can you email the file to yourself and then open it up on another computer - not sure if this will work but it's worth a go.

Thanks will have to wait til DH is home to know if we have the disc. Word wasn't a trial it's been on the computer since we got it a few years ago, it was just office that I downloaded as a trial.

Download Kingsoft Office

It's free and so close to Office 2013 that I'm surprised Microsoft haven't sued them into oblivion.

Personally I love it. Use it on all my computers now and you can even get it for Android tablets.

Thanks niceguy2 that looks like a pretty good alternative, buggered if I'm paying Microsofts prices for something that had already come with the computer for free!

libreoffice is free as well, and opensource.

I had this following a windows update, I had to reset the software that the pc was trying to open certain file types with.
I can't remember how I did it, but I am sure I followed a thread on here found it.
Not sure if it is the same sort of thing, but worth a try.
