can your laptop 'see' your wifi network?
how old is the laptop? Windows xp/7/8?
how old is the router?
what kind of security is set up on the router (wep/wpa)?
have you tried switching it off and switching it on again (laptop and router)?

If the router is new, perhaps the laptop is still looking for the old one have you put the network key for the router into the laptop?

If you can see it you should be able to connect. Click in the icon at the bottom right that gives you a list of wireless networks. Click on your wireless network in the list and you should get a connect button.

Sorry if i'm teaching you to suck eggs, but have you entered the wifi key correctly, making sure that it matches the key on the back of the router (so, capitalized/noncapitalized letters etc.)?

can you connect to the router (and browse internet etc.) via a wired connection, using the ethernet cable supplied with your router?
If so, could you try changing the password (depending on how many other devices you have and how much of a pain it is to change the password on all these)?

I had a similar problem when I got a new router - one of my laptops wouldn't connect to it. Getting the latest driver for the wireless network card sorted it.

Hi - Just a thought but have you checked whether you have inadvertentently turned off the wi-fi reciever function key - Have a look along the function keys on the top row, there may be one with a little pylon symbol (This is usually numbered F2 on a Dell for example). Hope you manage to sort things out

So when you try to connect do you get an error message?

Have you tried powering the router off?

I have turned the router off numerous times .
I don't get an error message it just says unable to connect .
I can connect to other WiFi points from my laptop

"Unable to connect" is an error message and Googling "wifi unable to connect" brings up a lot of possibilities.

The suggestion I would try first is:

If it has a mismatched network profile then delete the network profile, so it will create a new one.

Go into the network and sharing centre.
Delete the network that you can't connect to.
Try connecting again.

Can you still see the router when you scan from a device?

Report

This is a tricky one.

As the phone is now unable to connect that makes me suspect the router

This thread suggests that sometimes a complete reset to factory default and then setting the router up again can sometimes mysteriously resolve connection issues.

Are you using the factory default SSID (network name)? Another possibility is that there is another router in the vicinity using the same SSID.

Yes can still see the router .
Mine seems to be the only Virgin connection in the area so doubt it is a duplicate name iyswim
