I've had an iPhone since they first came out. But I've been so disappointed with my latest one, 4 replacement screens and it seems slow and crashes often. I also want to reduce my monthly bills.

I think I've narrowed down my choices but need help to choose:

  • Sony Xperia (J or E)
  • LG Nexus 4
  • Samsung Galaxy s 3
  • Samsung Galaxy s 3 mini (what's the difference from the above?)

I mainly use my phone for Facebook, browsing, notes, texting and apps. I've checked out android store and they seem to have all of the apps I use regularly.

What are the pros and cons of the above phones and what would you recommend? Thanks!

The S3 mini is basically a smaller version of the S3. Well that's what Samsung would like you to believe. There are some technical differences. Have a look at the link here: Comparison

Of all the phones I'd suggest going for the S3. The Sony phones look quite good but not many people have them so hard to say. I'd personally be worried about selling them when the time comes and support. The Nexus 4 on paper is good but lacking SD card support and the battery is sealed in. I hate that. Why have an Android phone and stop you from putting an SD card in and swapping the battery. It was annoying on the iphone but on Android, unforgivable.

You can get some absolutely stonking deals for the S3 now that the S4 is out. I've seen the two side by side and i think most people would struggle to tell the difference. In reality the main difference with the S4 seems to be that it's got some cute tweaks which you'll grow bored of and not use.

You can get mint condition used S3's now for < £250 sim free and on contract for a smidgen over £500 (£20.50ish pcm) depending on your usage. So it's a real bargain in my opinion too.

I just upgraded from a Samsung galaxy S to an S3 mini.

Went for the mini as I didn't need/want the bigger screen or handset. Recently bought a tablet. I personally don't like the thought of an A5 sized phone. It wouldn't fit in my back pocket.

Have only used the Sony Xperia Tipo, one of the Xperia family, and some {far, far, cheaper} Samsung Galaxy models.

I'd say it depends on your overall requirements (number of minutes, texts and rough guess at how much data you use) plus the limit of your monthly spend.

Depending on how much you wish to reduce your monthly outgoings, because depending on that limit, and how many minutes you require, some models might be over the limit.

Some of the networks may not be the best place to start (because for example, Carphone Warehouse will offer a discount on monthly cost to undercut most network package charges), and the e2save.com and mobiles.co.uk sites may offer cashback deals that could reduce your effective monthly charges.

HTC 8S - Windows 8. £159 at Amazon.

Yes I know that its not Android but DS has one and he thinks W8 is better than Android.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the best smartphone on the market and is well worth the money. S3 is pretty much the same as the S3 mini apart from size and a few minor downgrades in terms of processor and capacity, but if you're looking for a smaller phone, still worth it.

I have an S3 and have never had a problem with it.

Also, I wouldn't get W8, it's not as good as Android for apps, and the OS is clumpier than Android AND iPhone OS's
