Right, I have an iphone 5 all lovely and synced up to my itunes account, syncs automatically etc, no problems.

My son has just been given his uncles old iphone 3gs without a sim card so it can be used for music and apps..basically its now like an itouch.
He is eventually going to want to get some more apps, music etc

So whats going to happen when I plug it into my laptop?

Now I know one option is to have a separate windows account with a separate itunes and apple id, however I do not want to have to buy everything twice.

Ideally I would need it to be on my itunes and manually sync some of my stuff to his phone, but not all, its there an easy way to do this.

His phone still has some apps and music left on there by his uncle, would it be easier to wipe it clean before syncing? as they were bought with his ID.

Im very very cautious wth this sort of thing....terrified of losing all my stuff or something!

I dont really use icloud(dont really understand it), its on with a few things switched to on, but my icloud backup is off, I think this was because when I turned it on it said not enough space, so never bothered with it.does this affect the 2nd device at all?

I was nervous of this same problem!

I have an iPhone 4S and my son has an iPod. iTunes now just recognises two devices on the same iTunes so they are completely seperate without having to change any settings etc.

The only thing I hve noticed is that once my son had an app on his phone that I'm sure he didn't download, but I did. Unsure if it came from my account but it's no biggie and I will look at the settings when I have time

I also synch most of my stuff manually maybe you could do that first and then change to automatic when you're happy you know how it all works

I would definitely restore the old iPod before you connect up, but that's just me, I'd prefer all the settings and cookies etc restored to like new

Also-icloud is per email account if that makes sense so any icloud settings for your phone will only be for your phone

Should have also said for music I create a playlist for my son and then automatically synch just that playlist. This is so that my entire library isn't synced onto his iPod. There may be a better way to do this but I haven't figured out how!

Thanks so much for your reply. Took most of the morning to sort it all but it's done.
I restored his to original settings plugged it in and it saw it as a new iphone and then I just ticked a few apps and ticked for it to sync a playlist I'd created for his music.
He is connected my apple ID so have just had to tweak a few settings on his phone, but my phone is unaffected Grin

Glad it worked. It used to be so much hassle when you had two iPhones and one pc. Can't tell you how many ratings/playlists/libraries I've lost
Over the years!
