ipod Touch

my ds (10) went for a playdate at his friends house on Monday, we were looking for his ipod touch on Thursday and couldn't find it, contacted his friends parents and it isn't at their house either!!! We have torn our house apart looking for it but no success he saved his pocket up and his birthday money to buy it.

What I was wondering is, does it have something like a gps in it so we can locate it, I remember when I set up the Ipad that it has a locater in it, does the same apply to the ipod??? If so how do I go about locating it??

We are convinced that it is still at his friends house but can't go accusing them of theft, ds's fault for not checking he had it when he left!!

Unfortunately it doesn't have GPS, and even if it did you would have had to set it up to be traceable now. However there is one thing you could try, which is to see if it is connected to the WiFi router at the friends house. If the battery is still alive and it's connected to the wifi network there, it will show up in the DHCP client list in the router. This is a list of all the devices (it can include printers, phones and stuff as well as computers) that are connected to the router (assuming, geek alert, that it is using DHCP, but it 99% sure us).

To find out if it is connected you need to go to the status page of the router, by putting something like "192.168.1.1" into your web browser. I won't go into the full details here but basically this is a way of establishing if the thing is in the house and hence worth looking for. The parents might baulk at the idea but the friend might find it an interesting project. In the unlikely event that you still have the box the iPod came in, it will have a sticker on it saying what its Airport ethernet address is (something like "58:55:ca:ef:aa:79") and then you could identify it straight away in the DHCP client list. If not, you could just count the devices listed, and count the devices in the house- if there's one they can't account for, that's the iPod.

That's all I can think of, I'm afraid.

thank you for your help and advice, I am totally none geeky I'm afraid (old gimmer emotion!!) will pass info on to dh but I think we will have to give up any hope of finding it, we don't have wifi (live in the back of beyond/ Middle East and it would be too long and boring explaining why we don't!!) and I don't think the other family are at all technical, I'm just hoping that their children haven't kept it and keeping quiet about it and if they are.
