Can someone tell me how to remove the hard drive from a computer?

Cos I have an old knackered one I'd like to take to the dump but I'm worried that someone might manage to get personal stuff off it. An old mumsnet thread said to remove it and destroy it but I don't even know what the harddrive looks like? Advice would be gratefully received.

Is it a desktop? If it is then unplug it first. Then undo the screws on the outside of the case and remove the cover. There will be a series of "bays" at the front of the PC one of which will hold the CD drive and/or floppy disk drive. The hard disk is a rectangular metal box, about the size of a paperback book, and will be in one of the bays. There will be some screws holding it in place and some cables attached to it. Unplug the cables and remove the screws and you can pull it out.

The disk is inside the metal box so to destroy it you need to smash it up with a big hammer. Wear safety glasses.

Fabulous nocake. Thanks so much. I shall get the screwdriver out and have a rummage. Cheers again.

My laptop keeps telling that I have very low disk space left on c drive. I can do the clearup recommended but half an hour later it will flash up again, sometimes gaining 100mb.

I can't delete anymore programs as we are down to the ones that came with the laptop, is this a virus?

Anyone else had this? Had a lot of (ahem....) images on temporary internet files but these were of houses that neither of us had looked at (as well as porn). Don't fully understand how these files are created.
