Transfer music from old ipod/itunes to new iphone/itunes?

So I have an old ipod with lots of music on it. But after I got the ipod I got a new computer so some of the music is on my new itunes/laptop but a lot of the music is on my old itunes/laptop which is knackered. Is there any way to get the music off my old ipod and onto my new laptop/iphone or are my only options to either connect my iphone to my old laptop or upload the music to my new laptop again?

Apple don't make this easy but it is possible.

What sort of computer do you use? Is it a Windows PC (if so which version) or an Apple Mac?

It would actually be easier just to move the music from the old computer to the new computer and not get it off of the iPhone. So is the old computer still usable and do you have an external disk drive?

Again the method for this will depend on what computer you have, so provide the details and instructions can be given.

if all the music is on the ipod you should just be able to sync it to the new laptop in your same itunes account.
for instance I have my iphone and ipad, my DS ipod touch and DH ipod and iphone all able to synch with the one itunes account currently on my laptop.

No... And if you try and do an auto-sync from the new computer iPod you will delete all the music on the iPod that is not in iTunes on that new PC.

You can set it up to manually manage the music which won't delete the music off of the iPod but still won't move the music from the iPod to iTunes.

Once iTunes has the music you can happily sync many iOS devices with it either automatically or manually, but you need to get that music into iTunes.

And there's two ways to do that, one is to copy it off of the iPod using a non Apple utility and the other is to copy if off of the old PC.

I had this problem too, and with thanks to someone on here I found some third party software which cost about 20 squid.

I have a mac so mine is 4media iPod to Mac Transfer here

But if you have a windows pc you could try here

It's a pretty laborious process, but once you have this software you can steal borrow other people's music too.

You don't need to pay any money to do this, you can get free software that will do the trick.

On a Mac you can use:

On a PC I don't think you need any software at all, but it's been a while since I've done it on Windows. Once the OP replies with what OS they have I can dig up some Windows instructions if they're needed.

Thanks. The old laptop is Windows and just about working but very very slow. The new laptop is a MacBook. I don't have an external disk drive.

'Twas a joke - in my situation it means I finally get to listen to the music my husband has bought on itunes but on a different account.

It's a shame you weren't on the thread I started - could have saved myself the money. I ended up visiting the nearest apple store and getting no help from there at all. I did not have kind thoughts about Steve Jobs at that point.

Incidentally, if you want to get cross with someone, may I respectfully suggest Itunes? I'm in Australia and the cost of albums over here is substantially greater than to buy it from UK itunes. How ludicrous is that? (somehow I doubt that the royalty payment is going to be greater).

Thanks BadgersPaws. You are quite right, it is incredible to get advice on stuff like this on here. I probably wouldn't bother to even try otherwise. I can assure you it's only my music collection I want to get to.

Do this if all the music you want is not on the iPod, basically we want the iPod to become the master of your music collection, that is to say that it should have everything on it.

Once you're iPod has all the stuff on then we need to move it from the iPod and onto your Mac.

You can use the software I gave above to do this:

That will make the iPod appear to be an external disk that you can view from Finder. And you can then drag the folders of music you want onto your Mac (for example make a folder on your desktop called "From my iPod"), disconnect the iPod, then drag the music into iTunes and finally delete it off of your Macs disk.

(I'm not sure if you can drag music straight into iTunes or not, I can't remember if you can run iTunes and that software at the same time).

Apple don't make this easy because if it were too easy to copy music off of an iPod and onto a computer people would be doing it left, right and centre. As the comment above shows people seem to think nothing of stealing music. So unfortunately the thieves have meant that Apple have had to make doing this a bit tricky.

You don't have to buy from iTunes, you can buy music from places like Amazon as well, the iPod will handle them. Apple have recently cut prices in Australia but I honestly don't know if the prices are due to the record companies demanding a certain level of royalties (royalties are set country by country so they will differ in Australia) or Apple gouging.

Again apologies for jumping on what was a joke, this is a sore point with me.

I a family has 2 ipods (me and DH) and itunes on 1 machine (my macbook)- is it possible to have the ipods maintaining their own sets of playlists? i.e. my ipod has my playlists, and DH's ipod has his playlists.

It just bugs me that all my playlists are gone, and his are on there...

I think to do this you will have to set the iPods to manually manage their music. Instructions for this are here:

If you do this then you'll have to manually drag new music from iTunes onto the iPod, it won't automatically appear.

I'm not that familiar with playlists as I don't tend to use them, however manually managing things is what you usually do to manage multiple devices from one iTunes and it's easy to turn off if it doesn't fix the problem or you just don't like it.

We have two ipods and one macbook and manually manage our music as BadgersPaws suggests. It's a bit annoying but better than having his music on my ipod/phone! What do you mean all your playlists are gone though? Where have they gone from? I do think there should be a better way of doing this... like having separate accounts on the same itunes or something so you can still just sync each individual device. Although actually when I set up my new iphone I did notice options to only sync certain artists etc so maybe that's an option... I haven't tried it yet though.

When the iPod is plugged in, click on the little iPod icon in the lower right corner of the iTunes window (or select Preferences > iPod > Music).
This will open a window with a series of check-boxes. Select "Manually manage songs and playlists."
From now on (unless you change this setting) iTunes will will NOT automatically load or erase any tracks when you plug in your iPod. You'll have to do this stuff by dragging and dropping tracks or playlists. So all your music on the iPod should be safe when you reformat your computer.

1.The first thing you want to do is connect your ipod to your computer via the white USB cable.
WARNING: If itunes opens and asks you if you would like to sync up your ipod click NO!

2.After your ipod is connected, open My Computer, or just Computer from the start menu and look for the ipod drive. It should be in the (F:drive. You will see the ipod logo in the listing of disk drives.

3.If you are using Windows vista: Open the ipod drive and click on ORGANIZE. Then folder and search options tab. Then View and Show hidden files and folders.
If you are using Windows XP, open the ipod drive and click tools then Folder options then View tab then click show hidden files and folder. Finally click Apply.

4.Now you should have a new folder called ipodcontrol. Open that folder up and you should see the following: Calendar, Contacts, ipodcontrol, notes, photos, ect. If you are trying to save all of your music then the ipod_control folder is the only one you need to worry about.

5.Open the ipod_control folder then open the music folder. Copy each one of those folders (should look similar to these: F00, F01 ...) onto your computer. You can do this by creating a new folder on your desktop and dragging the files into the folder.

6.Open itunes and insert the new folder you created on your computer's desktop into: library ---> Music

You can now sync your ipod to this new computer with out losing all of your music.
