Kindle 3G - Any views on the internet browser?

Hi - I am getting a kindle soon but wanted to ask if anyone would share their experience of using the 3G wi-fi connection.
Basically, I am thinking that if I can access mumsnet, and bbc, and Times online when out & about then I would be vvvv happy. BUT if the the 3G is tricky to use (or rubbish) then I will save my money and buy the cheaper kindle.
TIA

Browser not easy to use IMHO

I have a 3G and signal seems fine, download speeds for books and subscriptions fine when out and about but the actually web browser is clunky to use.

It's really not great. And because it's black and white, it doesn't look as good and isn't so easy to read. Slow to load pages and keyboard is very fiddly to make anything longer than a short sentence-type post.

BUT definitely worth having the 3G so that you can download books where there isn't WiFi.

Because there is no mouse type pointer/it isn't a touch screen device. So say you were on BBC news and you wanted to open a new story you couldn't click on the link to open it the way you normally would. You would have to use the up/down/left/right arrows to highlight the link and then press enter.

It is black and white, so pics won't come out great.

It's great at what it does, as a book reader but as a web browser it is slow to use and limited in quality.

The browser is very, very clunky. As said, tiny keyboard and very slow. It's an extra in an emergency but not fun to use.

Yes I have given up on the browser really. You can load in some favourite pages which speeds things up slightly, but you have to have a lot of patience to keep highlighting and scrolling and making things bigger etc.

Thanks guys. I think you have convinced me to choose the cheaper kindle instead - maybe I'll treat myself to more books with the cash I've saved! Grin

the 3g is good for the downloading anywhere feature

also you can upload music to it which is sometimes rather nice (though it just plays through every track and doesn't allow you to select for mood)

not for the internet browser although at a push when you need to find out something it's fine

I'd recommend the 3G one actually over the basic

but the thing you really need is one of those covers with a built in light - particularly if you have a tendency to read in bed
