Help! How do I charge a new iPod Touch 4G?

Can anyone talk me through it? I want to charge it ready for my son when he comes home from school (it's his birthday present). The instructions only mention downloading the latest version of iTunes; I don't even know how to do that.

TIA

Do you have iTunes at all? If not, you need to download it. (Google it and you should be able to download it that way - most recent PCs come with iTunes already installed though).

In the box you should have a white cable - it slots into a USB port on your computer and will charge the iPod up via the computer.

The reason you need iTunes is that you first have to register the iPod, but you can charge it without having to do that bit.

Thank you BecauseImWorthIt. I'm on a Mac, so I do have iTunes. So do I plug the wide end of the white cable into the port at the bottom end of the iPod? I've tried to do this but it doesn't seem to fit and I don't want to force it.

Sorry to be so hopeless. I hate gadgets.

Great, got it in at last. Ah, I see I need to download the latest version of iTunes (am such a technophobe I've been putting off downloading it).

Thank you Bran.

iTunes is telling me I can't download this version (10.3.1) because 'this package type requires Mac OS X 10.5. I don't know what version of OS (whatever that is) I have.

My iPod touch didn't come with a mains charger (although I have since got one from ebay).

Am no help on the OS front - hopefully someone else is.

No, no mains charger here either. How can a tiny silver rectangle be so overwhelming?

Eek, I'm on version 10.4.11.

Which means? er? How do I upgrade my operating system? This is sooo complicated Confused

You lot are great.

Pity I'm gadget-illiterate.

You have to buy a copy of the new OS. Do you have a PC anywhere? There was an article in the Guardian a few weeks ago about this very thing, new iTunes runs fine on any old version of Windows but you need a fairly upto date version of OSX.

Yes, there's a PC laptop in the house.

Thanks everyone for trying to solve this techie problem for me. Need to get on with work now so am going to leave it for my DS to sort. They're born hard-wired aren't they?

Sounds like a plan. Cheers Littlelapin. Usually I adore Apple but I'm not feeling the love today. Will get my DS to investigate the PC option.
