Moron needs web design and hosting advice

I need to set up a little site - nothing fancy - mainly text with a few photographs. I am a complete idiot when it comes to anything computery. I downloaded WordPress but couldn't even install it.
That is how much of a moron I am.

Can anyone recommend an instant site/hosting company? I have had a look at the 123 packages - are they any good?
Can anyone explain bandwidth requirements to me in words of one syllable.

Many thanks!

I use wordpress successfully, my partner does freelance web design. Or were you after some decent free packages?

Hi - no they don't need to be free. I just wondered if any of the "instant site" packages on offer are any good.

If it's just text and a few pictures, don't worry about bandwidth.

Go to rather than and you can create a username and start putting your site together instantly for free. That will start you with a blog but it is very easy to change it to a Content Management System instead.

Any specific questions, feel free to PM me. I do this professionally, but I'm willing to help out a bit for free. grin

Angelfire seems easy. GoogleApps is good but tricky to set up IMHO.

it'd be good if you get some insider tips (*Tee2072*) sounds like they know what they're doing! Really love wordpress though and even picked up some coding skills whilst I've been running my blog! Thats fun (if you're a geek like me!)

Fantastic - thank you all very much - I shall explore all of these options.
Tee - brace yourself!

The good thing about having your own hosted Wordpress installation is that your business is NOT reliant upon the third party.
The instant-site solution would be ideal - although I would stay clear of 123-reg hosting. They are ok for domain names but hosting not.
Good luck!

You aren't a moron at all lubberlich!

You can't install Wordpress without a server, and a database: so unless you have hosting space - or are an intermediate geek, with a local server installed - all you have is a bunch of files. So go easy on yourself, everyone has to start somewhere.

I'd agree that is the fastest and simplest way to start.

If you do try self-hosting (slightly harder) I would agree with mattmarlow...Wouldn't pick 123 or 1&1 for hosting, or JustHost either. Pop back if you need recommendations.

Don't worry about bandwidth unless you have a huge site with lots of traffic.

Look at Wix... it sounds like this will give you exactly what you need for free and is SO easy to use

sorry to Hijack.

I have a domain name with a hosted with blackfoot
however no site yet.. what do I do now???

never - check your domain name can be transferred to another site (I would be surprised if it couldn't but check first)

Then, depending on your skills, build your site. Again, for newbies I recommend Wix, they have free and paid options, easy to use, don't need any technical/site building knowledge and have lots of templates.

Then you can make your existing domain name 'point' to the site you have built. (There's tutorials on Wix to help). Or PM me if you have specific q's

I just bought a domain name for two years and one years hosting for around £40 . I know nothing about websites but have been able to set up a five page site with a contact page. The company is called Enix, but I think it's called or something like that. Support were very very helpful too.

I used free software from them called sitebuilder to create the website, forgot to say.

Not a great choice of word imo.
