Anyone know the going hourly rate for a gardener? We desperately need help with ours - general cutting back and weeding - and I've just been quoted £17 an hour - yikes!

Depends where you are, we are in Norfolk and the rates vary from about £10-15 an hour.

I am qualified to NC level in Horticulture and having recently gone self-employed as a gardener. I am charging £15.00 per hour and £12.50 per hour for OAPs. Given I have to pay tax nad NI , not forgetting travel time and fuel costs, I don't think this rate is unreasonable.

Hi,I pay a gardener for a whole day's work(8 hours), at £18 per hour, and that's not the most expensive around here in Sevenoaks!

I'm a gardener in South west London and I'm RHS trained, I also work at a plant nursery (Petersham Nurseries) and have worked for 3 years for my sister garden design and maintenance company before starting on my own. I charge £15 per hour for my gardening and this includes all duties... pruning, planting to power washing and i also have a lovely address book with tree surgeons and hard landscapers to hand!!

Hi - I cover your area. I am based near Farnham and have been a self-employed gardener for the past 10 years. My husband will shortly be joining me hence my interest in taking on new work.
I have been with a number of my customers since I started the business so references will be readily available.
I am RHS trained, knowledgeable about plants and passionate about creating beautiful gardens.
If you are still looking for a gardener I would love to hear from you - [email protected]

We were just ripped off and charged £180- for 2 1/2 hours work by two men. This works out at £36- an hour and we will not be using, nor recommending that Gardener again !

We were just ripped off and charged £180- for 5 hours work. That works out at £36 pr hour. Never use people who say they charge by the work, not the hour and then only do part of the work. We paid but will not use, nor recommend this gardener.

I have also been ripped off
Wanted a quote to tidy my garden and cut my lawn
It's not a huge garden
Was quoted £140....which seemed fair enough
2 men arrived, not the business owner, and spent less than an hour strumming and mowing the lawn
They also broke one of my grandsons garden toys but failed to mention that
Works out at £70 an hour...
Really need someone reliable. I had a gardener for over 5 years but he moved away and I have struggled ever since
Am Wolverhampton if anyone can recommend someone
