If tis dead, the roots will be fine - you could drill into the stump and put poisonous stuff or salt inside, that usually helps but if already dead it shouldn't start to grow again.

I wouldn't plant anything else there for a while thouhg depending on what took it out iyswim.

How big is it?

Chop it down and drill holes into the stump so water can get in. Next spring it should have started to rot so will be easier to dig out. It may take longer but if it is everygreen likely to be soft wood I think.

I have done this with a few over the past couple of years.

Alternatively get a spade and a saw and get digging

ok thanks sounds easy, it's only about 4 ft, nothing else surrounding it has died

We had a whole row of conifers chopped down and the garden chappie said that there was no real need to drill down and fill with stuff cos it would disintegrate anyway being soft wood

If it was only 4' I would have a go at digging it out tbh. At least you can then use the space again.
